Chigger Bite: Symptoms & Signs

Chigger bites are caused by amitebelonging to theTrombiculidaefamily.

The most common symptom of achigger biteisitchingthat can be severe. Other associated symptoms are flat or raised redbumps on the skin. Thebumpsmay take on the appearance of ablister. Scratching can cause further skin injury, including redness and bleeding at the site.

Cause of chigger bites

Babychiggerscause chigger bites. The tiny biting organisms are most commonly found in the environment in grassy fields, gardens, parks, forests, and moist areas around lakes or rivers. At the time of the bite,chiggersinsert a feeding structure into the skin and inject enzymes that destroy host tissue. The chigger feeds on the dead or destroyed tissue. Chiggers do not burrow into the skin.
