How Do I Treat Fibromyalgia Pain?

Last Editorial Review: 8/11/2017

Ask the experts

I've been told that I have fibromyalgia. I have to deal with pain on a daily basis, but the pain in my lower back and left hip continues to cause me major problems. My doctor tells me that I can take over-the-counter pain relievers and do some stretching for the problem, but it isn't working. What should I do?

Doctor's response

You must discuss the persistence of symptoms with your doctor and the extent to which your daily activities are restricted. Together you can determine whether or not additional testing might be needed to detect alternative causes of pain in these areas. The treatment offibromyalgia, if that is what is causing your symptoms, can involve many different management methods and trials of a variety of medications. See your doctor for the best program for your particular situation.
