Typhus: Symptoms & Signs

Typhusis a bacterial condition. There are two types of typhus: epidemic typhus and endemic typhus.

Signs and symptoms of endemic typhus can include

• fever,
• rash,
• nausea,
• vomiting,
• diarrhea, and
• malaise.

Therashusually begins on the trunk and spreads. The symptoms and signs of epidemic typhus are typically more severe and can include

• bleeding into the skin,
• delirium, and
• low blood pressure.

The condition can be fatal.

Cause of typhus

Rickettsiabacteria that are transmitted to humans through bites of infected fleas ortickscause typhus. Risk factors for developing typhus include visiting or living in areas where rats, mice, and other animals have high populations. Examples can include poverty-stricken areas, refugee camps, or jails.
